Five solas of the Reformation
What the five solas were reacting against
- Sola Scriptura (“Scripture alone”) vs. Scripture + Tradition and Magisterium
- Sola fide (“faith alone”) vs. faith + works
- Sola gratia (“grace alone”) vs. grace + merit
- Solus Christus (“Christ alone”) vs. Christ + the Pope and priestly order
- Soli Deo gloria (“glory to God alone”) vs. glory to God + veneration of Mary, saints, and angels
More sola fide passages
I’ve pulled the support here for sola fide largely from chapter 9 of Matthew Barrett’s Faith Alone: The Doctrine of Justification. He continues to give yet more Scriptural support in chapters 10–15. Chapters 8 and 16 appear very helpful for understanding why good works cannot be effectual for justification (chapter 8 deals with human sin and chapter 16 deals with the role of good works).
