Suggestion from Jonathan
In an e-mail on July 25, 2016:
While every verse is up for interpretation, I think that Ecc. 12:7 is worth mentioning on your pre-existence page, for it seems to clearly and naturally suggest our spirits were with God before our physical bodies were created: “Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it”. Did you ever notice that the creation story in Genesis never mentions the creation of spirits (neither ours, nor angels’ etc.), it only says that God placed into our newly created bodies the “breath of life”, “breath” being the same Hebrew word used for “spirit” in Hebrew (ruach), suggesting that God placed man’s spirit (which was with God) into physical body to make it alive.
